Screens, air, and the modern eye

Most of what irritates the eye during a working day is environmental, and most of it is adjustable.

A screen does not damage the eye by being a screen. It changes behaviour. Attention narrows, blinking slows, and the tear film that normally resurfaces every few seconds is left to thin out.

Add conditioned air moving across a desk and the same hours feel considerably longer by the evening.

Small adjustments that hold up

Set the top of the monitor slightly below eye level so the lids sit lower and cover more of the surface. Move air vents away from your face. Keep a glass of water within reach, less for hydration mythology than as a reason to look away from the screen.

Every twenty minutes, find something across the room and look at it for twenty seconds. It is a small habit and the only one on this list that costs nothing to keep.
